Humor

Quiet road.  Just you and your thoughts.  Vastness of the sky.  Loneliness of an all-night diner on the side of the highway.

2. “Midnight City” by M83

**

3. “(Looking For) The Heart of a Saturday Night,” by Tom Waits

About The Byronic Man

Recently voted "The Best Humor Site in America That I, Personally, Write," The Byronic Man is sometimes fiction, but sometimes autobiography. And sometimes cultural criticism. Oh, and occasionally reviews. Okay, it's all those different things, but always humorous. Except on the occasions that it's not. Ah, geez. Look, it's a lot of things, okay? You might like it, is the point.

Haven’t thought about that Waits song in forever. I would take out Dire Straits and pop in Metallica’s Master of Puppets or Battery. At night you can do your best air drumming and sing along as loud as possible. Plus it’ll keep you awake for at least half an hour after it’s done.

Leave the Dire Straits, but I agree about Metallica. Make mine “Enter Sandman” and then add Alice in Chains, “Man In the Box” so I can scream the lyrics alone in the dark.

Maybe it’s a sign of my mellowing with age, but I listen to a lot less “angry” music late at night. Evening time, definitely. Well, all other times. But maybe I’ve started getting contemplative/sissy at night.

    Tom Waits = Yes!

How about The Who’s “I Can See for Miles”? A neat little irony if you’re driving in the middle of the night.

These days, with the rising prices of petrol, a lonely ride down the highway would just be me calculating how much money is vehicle is burning away by the minute.

May I suggest, “You Can Sleep While I Drive” by Melissa Etheridge. The lyrics say it all.

I haven’t heard of some of those tunes, very interesting stuff. I was driving home from school one night recently when The Beastie Boys song So Whatcha Want came on and I was cranking it to stay awake. Kinda sad when an old mom like me is head-banging in a minivan.

But for those long drives, I would also vote for anything by Tom Petty, Robert Plant.

Tom Petty. Into the Great Wide Open.

Windows down. Full volume. Singing along at the top of your lungs. There is nothing better.

Before I even got to Dire Straits on your list I thought, “Oh, a Dire Straits song, for sure.” I’d also add anything by Fleetwood Mac as I am their biggest fangirl.

I like this list. Like Jen, I would probably add a Fleetwood Mac song. I offer “Gold Dust Woman.” Number one, most definitely!! In fact, I pretty sure I’ve listened to this song in the middle of the night on some dusty highway. Oh, yes,

Yes on 6 and 7. I submit for your approval “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones, “”Thunder Road” by Springsteen, “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac, “The World I Know”/”Run” by Collective Soul, “This Train” by Indigo Girls and “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins. Obviously.
