Quiet road. Just you and your thoughts. Vastness of the sky. Loneliness of an all-night diner on the side of the highway.

Oh, good topic! My playlist would include Tom Petty and The Eagles and some Creedance.
October 20, 2013 at 7:15 am
Or Creedence, for people who spell it right. 🙂
October 20, 2013 at 7:34 am
Ditto that! And always, always, “The Boxer.”

Cree Dance sounds like a new age group.

Hotel California – The Eagles
Broken Wings – Mr. Mister
Sailing – Christopher Cross

EmmyLou Harris’ Feeling Single, Seeing Double.

Haven’t thought about that Waits song in forever. I would take out Dire Straits and pop in Metallica’s Master of Puppets or Battery. At night you can do your best air drumming and sing along as loud as possible. Plus it’ll keep you awake for at least half an hour after it’s done.

Leave the Dire Straits, but I agree about Metallica. Make mine “Enter Sandman” and then add Alice in Chains, “Man In the Box” so I can scream the lyrics alone in the dark.

Maybe it’s a sign of my mellowing with age, but I listen to a lot less “angry” music late at night. Evening time, definitely. Well, all other times. But maybe I’ve started getting contemplative/sissy at night.
October 20, 2013 at 7:47 am
Tom Waits = Yes!
How about The Who’s “I Can See for Miles”? A neat little irony if you’re driving in the middle of the night.
October 20, 2013 at 7:55 am
David Wilcox/Tom Prasada-Rao, “Whisper of the Wheels”.
Great topic!

These days, with the rising prices of petrol, a lonely ride down the highway would just be me calculating how much money is vehicle is burning away by the minute.

May I suggest, “You Can Sleep While I Drive” by Melissa Etheridge. The lyrics say it all.
October 20, 2013 at 9:52 am
I haven’t heard of some of those tunes, very interesting stuff. I was driving home from school one night recently when The Beastie Boys song So Whatcha Want came on and I was cranking it to stay awake. Kinda sad when an old mom like me is head-banging in a minivan.
But for those long drives, I would also vote for anything by Tom Petty, Robert Plant.
October 20, 2013 at 6:02 pm
Have you heard Plant’s stuff with Alison Krauss? Really, really good. “Please Read The Letter” should be on this list. And all lists.
October 21, 2013 at 3:56 am
Oh yeah, most definitely. I’ve seen him in concert twice and he pretty much kicks ass all-around. One of my all-time favorite singers.
October 20, 2013 at 10:13 am
I like listening to “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service.
October 20, 2013 at 2:09 pm
Wonderwall by Oasis. American Pie by Don MacLean. Anything by the Ramones to get your head slamming.
October 20, 2013 at 2:10 pm
Tom Petty. Into the Great Wide Open.
Windows down. Full volume. Singing along at the top of your lungs. There is nothing better.
October 20, 2013 at 6:01 pm
I thought of a lot of Tom Petty, but couldn’t narrow it down to one song, so figured I’d leave it and have faith that others would throw him in there.
October 20, 2013 at 4:30 pm
This is a great list. I would add some Creedence as well and Bowie and Annie Lennox.
October 20, 2013 at 6:05 pm
for me, steely dan’s “deacon blues” always provides some good driving music.
there’s the line about dying behind the wheel. which seems pretty apropos if you just happen to… well…
October 20, 2013 at 7:02 pm
Before I even got to Dire Straits on your list I thought, “Oh, a Dire Straits song, for sure.” I’d also add anything by Fleetwood Mac as I am their biggest fangirl.
October 20, 2013 at 7:58 pm
Nice list.
Chris Smither, “Surprise, Surprise” might make a nice addition.
October 20, 2013 at 8:33 pm
I like this list. Like Jen, I would probably add a Fleetwood Mac song. I offer “Gold Dust Woman.” Number one, most definitely!! In fact, I pretty sure I’ve listened to this song in the middle of the night on some dusty highway. Oh, yes,
October 21, 2013 at 4:21 am
So many good tunes, a lot I haven’t heard in a long time.
anything by Chris Issac, they are all kind of haunting, Blue Rodeo ‘five days in May’.
October 21, 2013 at 5:33 am
John Mayer, I love John Mayer. and Dire Straits!
October 21, 2013 at 5:42 pm
Yes on 6 and 7. I submit for your approval “Wild Horses” by the Rolling Stones, “”Thunder Road” by Springsteen, “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac, “The World I Know”/”Run” by Collective Soul, “This Train” by Indigo Girls and “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins. Obviously.
