This Is Just To Say…

“This Is Just To Say”

By William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
This is Just To Say…

Nah, it’s cool. I’ll just take them home tonight. It’ll be fine. Who’s going to just eat someone else’s plums without asking, right?

Under no circumstances eat
The plums
That are in
The icebox
They are part of
An experiment on powerful
In fruit
Forgive me
The fridge at the lab is broken
And the pesticide is so toxic
And so virulent
This is Just To Say…

Did I say “very soon”? I meant “now.” Now would be better.

I have eaten
That was in
Your icebox
And also that box of expensive cookies
You were probably
For a special occasion
Sorry, but
I’m pregnant
So you should probably just roll with it
And go to the store again very soon.
This is Just To Say…
I have eaten
The hamburger
That fell on the floor
1.5 seconds ago

And I love you, too…   can I have another hamburger?

And which
You were possibly
Not intending
To give to me
I feel really bad
But I’m a dog
And hamburgers are really good
And I love them
This is just to say…
I have crashed
The car
That was
In your garage

Oh, hey, is this your house? Crazy.

And which
You probably
didn’t know that
I’d borrowed
Forgive me
My blood sugar
Was so low
Because someone ate
my God damn plums.

About The Byronic Man

Recently voted "The Best Humor Site in America That I, Personally, Write," The Byronic Man is sometimes fiction, but sometimes autobiography. And sometimes cultural criticism. Oh, and occasionally reviews. Okay, it's all those different things, but always humorous. Except on the occasions that it's not. Ah, geez. Look, it's a lot of things, okay? You might like it, is the point.

  1. She's a Maineiac Says:

How odd. “I’m pregnant so you should just roll with it” were the exact words I told my husband as well.

Your line about the dog “and I love them” sent me over the edge!

  2. Life in the Boomer Lane Says:

You give new meaning to the art of William Carlos Williams.

  3. Renée A. Schuls-Jacobson Says:

Omigosh. Just might have to use this exercise with college students when trying to teach parody. I think they could do this. Fantastic!

  4. skippingstones Says:

Very clever and enjoyable! I love to start the day with a chuckle.

  5. gojulesgo Says:

I kind of already liked this poem. Now I LOVE it. And I’m also angry at just the thought of someone eating my expensive cookies [that I don’t have].

    • The Byronic Man Says:

Williams is one of those poets people just HATE sometimes. They use him as examples of how “you can write anything and call it poetry,” but I agree – there’s a beautiful simplicity to his poetry. It’s almost like Chinese poetry or haiku. He’s not as funny as me, though.

  6. MJ, Nonstepmom Says:

I’m with the dog – ” hamburgers are really good and i love them” !

  7. susielindau Says:

You are lot more creative with your plums than Williams. I bet you could really go far with a six-pack of beer.

  8. Soma Mukherjee Says:

omg you have done a great service by rewriting the poem..this is exactly how it should have been in the first place…

  9. alleybeth Says:

This, has made my day. Love the one about the hamburger…

  10. BrainRants Says:

Byronic, you’re a poet, but we didn’t know it.

  11. Audrey Says:

This is awesome! It always comes back to plums…

  12. therealkenjones Says:

    This is just to say:
    Your writing is
    to the point
    of intimidating

But if I asked you to stop
    I would lose
    the pleasure
    of reading it

    So please keep it up
    And take this
    back-handed compliment
    with you

  13. Life With The Top Down Says:

Loved that you said “icebox”. Somethings from childhood just stick with you and that one term brought back happy times. Poem was great, picture commentary is always a joy!

  14. angeliquejamail Says:

Yeah, even after reading through all the comments, I’m still gigglesnorting over the very last one about the blood sugar being low. I’m definitely using this series in my CW class, with your permission.
